The Bear

Updated: Oct 28, 2024

Many people refrain from training or feel intimidated by it, whether due to lack of motivation or insufficient knowledge about training. So what motivates me to train?

Imagine being alone in a North American forest for about an hour and a half, maybe two hours. What animal would you fear encountering? A bear, right?

Why, you might wonder...

It's because a bear is massive, tall, strong, powerful, and swift. With claws and teeth that could easily tear you apart.

Consider it an alter ego, a different persona, or just insanity but when I train at the gym, I become the Bear... and the gym transforms into my forest. And it's not the people who fear me.

No...

It's the gym itself...

Every 45-pound plate dreads me, fearing that I'll load them onto a barbell and pump them out for 30 minutes.

The barbell fears my grip, anxious that I might apply so much weight and pressure that it will bend.

The machines fear me, aware that I'm about to push them harder than they've been pushed all day.

My mere presence terrifies the gym. I don't fear the gym... The gym fears me...

Often, I witness many individuals who are scared of the gym for various reasons. They might fear judgment based on their self-image or how others perceive them. They worry about not appearing muscular or strong enough in front of their peers. They may feel overwhelmed by the gym equipment and lack the know-how to initiate training. Their lack of motivation, determination, commitment, or discipline could also be sources of fear.

All these fears originate in their minds and hearts, hindering them from commencing their training and embarking on their body transformation journey. As a personal trainer, my goal is to show people how to convert that fear into energy, that energy into strength, and that strength into power. Through structured, tailored training, they no longer fear the gym or training; it's the other way around.

The gym should fear you, just as it fears me... just as it fears the Bear.
